How to Re-implement Your Intranet

Intranet 2.0 in 10 Not-So-Easy Steps: I really enjoyed this article about how to re-implement and intranet at your company.  I see a lot of articles like this, but this one was really, really well-done.  The first step (of 10) is a good one.

Step 1: Blow up the old intranet.

Why? It’s irrelevant to employees’ day-to-day job. The cumbersome updating process alienates people. It’s out of date, and usage is dismal.

How? Find the intranet server, get to a command prompt, and type >rm –rf *. (That’s a server admin joke.) Alternatively, unplug it. Seriously, it’s not worth trying to fix; you’ve got to start over.

Further down, they have another good tip:

Step 8: Make them use it. Once.

[…] How? In brief group training sessions, get every employee in your organization to click the Edit button. Get them to edit their profile, add a page, add a comment.

The entire article is really well thought-out.  Very much worth reading.

It’s also worth mentioning that the author is ThoughtFarmer, who make a really, really good-looking intranet product.

I've heard of some great intranet re-launch strategies, including a 'treasure hunt' style quiz aimed at getting users used to the functionality of the new intranet. Make it fun to keep people stimulated!
